We welcome applications from international students who wish to come to the University of Passau to study for a doctorate in German Studies, Media Studies, Southeast Asian Studies, Education or one of the 50 other disciplines offering doctorates at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
The University prides itself on its highly international outlook. We are very pleased to see that a substantial and growing proportion of our student body comes from abroad. Moreover, many of our students are enrolled in our unique Culture and Language programmes, which specialise in specific regions of the world – so there is a good chance you’ll meet other students who are keen to practise their language skills and get to know you.
When applying, please give us sufficient time to process your application. The admissions procedure involves requesting information from the German Central Advisory Office on Foreign Education Systems. This step may take anywhere from some weeks to months, and we would therefore ask you to plan accordingly.

We recommend that you read the highly relevant information from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) first, as it may answer many of your questions about the application and admissions procedure.
The Graduate Centre
The Graduate Centre provides comprehensive information on organisational and interdisciplinary topics concerning doctoral and postdoctoral research and study. In co-operation with the Centre for Information Technology and Media Services (ZIM), the Graduate Centre manages the assignment of accounts for the university computer network to doctoral researchers who are not associated with the university (external doctoral researchers), so that they can use the University's IT services.
