1. Symposium of the Academic Forum Myanmar, on “Unity and Development in Myanmar”, (28.-30 March 2012), University of Passau

The Academic Forum Myanmar at the Dept. of Southeast Asian Studies, University of Passau, will conduct a symposium entitled ‘Unity and Development in Myanmar’ in the last week of March 2012. Since the elections in 2010 and the installation of an elected government in March 2010 the country is rapidly opening up to the outside world and establishing international contacts with unprecedented rapidity. In domestic politics we observe an expansion of areas of political and social activities. Still, the government emphasizes that the ‘national unity’ of the country must be preserved under all circumstances. These developments and the results of a number of journeys to the country and of discussions with colleagues there give rise to the hope that in the near future academic and scholarly contacts will be possible in greater numbers and on a more durable basis.

The current developments and the political, economic and social possibilities arising there from will be discussed during the planned symposium. Ideally, the papers presented should deal – preferably from various perspectives – with the current situation in Myanmar and the observed and expected consequences of the opening. The reasons for the sudden change of direction should be highlighted and discussed as well. The following overarching topics have been identified:

-         State of the Art in general (problematique, state of the art, possible future perspectives in various disciplines)

-         Economic situation and development of the economy

-         Potential of development politics and policies

-         Modernisation of research and teaching; recommendations for educational institutions

-         Political, social, historical, religious discourses

-         Communication and institutional change
