(Degree: M.A. Southeast Asian Studiies)
On top of regionally specific in-depth knowledge of Southeast Asia, the research-oriented Master's Southeast Asian Studies programme provides methodological and practical skills which allow you to independently handle scientifically complex issues. The two-year programme focuses on the study of contemporary development in Southeast Asia using a social science approach. Besides the relevant theory, students also study epistomology and research methods. An important module in this programme is a research project with all students must conduct independently in Southeast Asia over the course of several months.
The language of instruction is English.

(Degree: Ph.D)
The Ph.D. programme is closely connected with the on-going research at both Chairs of Southeast Asian Studies. Ph.D. candidates should thus select a research topic which is related to the existing fields of research. The programme generally requires three to five years. The first year is allotted to the thorough study of research methodology and the relevant theory. On the basis of this, the Ph.D. candidate develops his/her own research question and project design. The Ph.D. candidates are encouraged to spend about one year for empirical research in Southeast Asia. The field work is followed-up by the data analysis and the writing of the thesis in Passau, usually accompanied by regular debates in workshops and conferences.
The language of instruction is English.
